The‘Jadu’
has done, what a ‘Whistle’ could not
December 2013,
the Delhi Assembly Elections have seen a bureaucrat come into power as a direct
representative of the people. The entire nation was in praise for the Aam Aadmi
Party for initiating the change. However, almost 6years back, another IAS
officer had tried to mobilise the masses in the same direction but in vain.
What is it that differentiated the Jan Lokpal Movement from the Lok Satta
Movement?
Arvind
Kejrival, an IITian and an ex IRS officer is a social activist who played a key
role in the drafting of the Right to Information Act. He was one of the active
members of the Anti-Corruption Movement initiated by the social activist Anna
Hazare. The Aam Aadmi Party was founded by him with the help of few other
social activists and bureaucrats. The national capital state has voted for them
thus making it a point that the public is waiting for a change.
In 1996, Jay
Prakash Narayan, an ex IAS officer had initiate the Lok Satta Movement which
aimed at achieving the same goals like ‘the rule of common man’ and ‘the
passing of RTI Act’. The Lok Satta Movement was wide spread throughout the
nation and was welcomed by all sects of people. The Lok Satta party was
launched in 2006 in Andhra Pradesh followed by few other states. But the
General Elections have declared that the people are not ready for a change.
The masses
which have rejected the ruling of bureaucrats 4years ago have now welcomed them
with a loud applause. The voting behaviour has rapidly changed in a span of
6years. The mindset of the people has changed and the youth today are thinking
a lot in terms of politics and now-a-days it is the manifesto that is attracting
them and not mere money. Many surveys proved that the votes of the first time
voters are going to show a great impact on the numbers and that the youth is
looking forward for a change.
Jay Prakash
Narayan had chosen a state where different aspects like caste, religion,
regional identity etc...Play a key role in determining the voting behaviour. On
the other hand, Arvind Kejriwal has campaigned in the national capital where
national identity is more cared for than any other communal factors. The election
campaign of J P Narayan with high standard manifesto and the absence of the
topic of subsides in his intellectual speeches has failed to attract the common
man.
This was in
contrast to the Arvind Kejriwal’s method of speaking to the youth of the city
over the FM Radio. The Lok Satta’s elaborate explanations of the policies of
the Indian polity and JP’s sticking to the principles has a bad impact when
compare to the Arvind Kejriwal’s breaking the rules and highlighting the long
forgotten rules like public referendum, public swearing etc…
Thus, the
Whistle Blower’s Whistle was not well heard by all the sects of the people
while the Jadu could sweep all the hearts with a single swipe.
