“All work and no play makes jack a dull boy”,
a once very prevalent proverb has now turned out to be wrong. Children today
play but that is making them lazier and weak. Once ‘Roald Dahl ‘had
advised the parents to throw the ‘Idiot Box’ out of the house. But if he
is alive today, he would have begged them to let the children watch the
television instead of falling prey to this ‘brain eating demon’.
The impact of
video games is day by day making the children less sensitive to the real world
and strangers to fairy lands. Games which were once classified into indoor and
outdoor have now completely transformed their forms. Little Jack plays cricket,
running, chess and soccer every day, but he is the most inactive student of the
class. This is because he plays all the games in his father’s i-phone, without
moving an inch from his chair.
Mobile phones,
laptops, tablets, nothing is an exemption for this addiction. Parents argue
that they learn shooting from Angry Birds, running from Temple Run and driving
from Dr.Driving. But, in fact all they are learning is to efficiently move
their fingers across the screen lying idly in their hands. Children who are
supposed to be wandering around in the fairy lands are today seen peeping into
the smart phones.
In the past one
could always find these young faces smiling at every single person passing by
their way. But now, the smiles have turned vague and the faces are rarely found
observant. One shall miss the routine hullaballoo of kids in public places with
all these minors getting their ears stuck with ear phones.
Even the book
shelves are replaced by the cell phones. Online shopping has become so common
that the child orders whatever he wants at a go without even consulting his
parents. ‘You-tube’ has become their pass time and ‘Friv’ their
play ground. ‘Wikipedia’ is the new encyclopaedia and ‘Criminal Case’
has totally replaced adventure and fiction.
Apart from these,
‘Facebook’ replaced relations and ‘Gmail’ destructed barriers. Skype
made international relations possible but on a whole, they broke the inner
relations over all. Elders no longer inspire them, books no longer attract
them. Sun no longer teases them and rain no longer frightens them. Because may
it be day or night, whether it be summer or winter, they sit lazily on the sofa
and relax in the company of this uninvited guest playing on their own with
someone who has never breathed in their life.
Once, we were a
part of nature. Now, we have parted from nature so much so that anything that
does not relate itself to nature is called man-made. Let us wake up much before
a painting done by a kid with a man in the field and a woman at the pond is
considered creative.
In the continuous race for global knowledge
let us not let our kids lose the opportunity to be naughty but smart. Let us
for once enjoy their innocence filled interrogations. Let them have their best
experiences with skinned knees and paper boats. Let them have bright future
with memories of childhood where in they were still innocent children and not
the outdated moody adults.
